🔍 What Are Trailing Dogs?

Trailing dogs are highly trained canines capable of following the unique scent trail left by a specific individual. Unlike traditional tracking dogs, trailing dogs:

• Require a properly preserved scent article

• Are not distracted by other people in the area

• Work on long leashes

• Can follow trails that are several days old

​

These dogs are invaluable in locating lost persons or suspects who have fled a scene.

California Search K9’s Bloodhounds are scent-specific, meaning they follow only the target’s scent—even in crowded environments. For example:

• If three individuals are involved in a shooting, the dog can isolate and follow the shooter’s scent using bullet casings as the scent article.

• This precision makes them ideal for homicide investigations, suspect apprehension, and search & rescue operations.
